Motorola R7 at a glance
The Motorola R7 is a licensed digital two-way radio for teams. It works in analog and in DMR, the digital standard that most business radios share. It suits security, logistics, construction and events.
The one thing to know: the version you buy decides the features.
Motorola launched the R7 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa on 28 April 2022.
Who the Motorola R7 is for
Security teams get an emergency button on every version and a Lone Worker feature, a safety alert for a person working alone. The Premium tier adds Man Down, an alert for a worker who has fallen.
Logistics sites get Wi-Fi, short text messages and location. The data sheet lists outdoor tracking by GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo, accurate to under 5 m. Indoors it lists tracking through Bluetooth beacons.
Construction crews get an IP68 and IP66 case built to MIL-STD-810 methods. An intrinsically safe version, certified to the US and Canadian UL TIA-4950 standard, takes a 3200 mAh battery.
Event crews get loud, clear audio: top loudness is 102 phon at 30 cm, and can be set to 107. The R7a lacks dual-microphone noise cancellation.
Pick something else if only a few people talk inside one shop. License-free radios need no paperwork, and the PMR446 guide lists them. For plain DMR voice at a lower price, see the Hytera PD405 and Motorola R5 below.
Motorola R7 range: the claim and real use
Motorola publishes no range figure for the R7. The data sheet gives power: 5 W on VHF, 4 W on UHF and 350 MHz, and 1 W on low power. A 4 W UHF radio sends eight times the 0.5 W that PMR446 allows.
Receiver sensitivity is 0.16 microvolt in analog and 0.14 in digital. That is the weakest signal it can still understand.
This site's range model puts a 4 W UHF handheld at 1.6 to 2.7 km on open land and 1.2 to 1.9 km in a suburb. In a town centre it gives 0.8 to 1.3 km. The lower figure holds in nine places out of ten, and the higher one in half.
These are model results, not measurements. No source gives a figure for a forest, so walk a test route first. Walls and floors cut range further, and the range tool lets you enter your own site.
Motorola R7 battery and charging
Motorola rates battery life for a typical day: 5 percent talking, 5 percent listening and 90 percent idle. The test runs at full transmit power with GNSS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and the option board off. The pack is lithium-ion, and the data sheet lists no AA option.
The table gives the UHF figures. VHF models are rated 20 hours digital and 15 analog on the first pack.
| Battery pack | Digital | Analog | Weight, full keypad |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2200 mAh slim (PMNN4807) | 19 h | 14.5 h | 316 g |
| 2450 mAh (PMNN4808) | 21.5 h | 16.5 h | 346 g |
| 2850 mAh (PMNN4809) | 25 h | 19 h | 333 g |
| 3200 mAh intrinsically safe (PMNN4810) | 28 h | 21.5 h | 366 g |
If your team talks more than 5 percent of the time, expect fewer hours. The test leaves GNSS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off, so switching them on should cost hours too.
The battery works down to -20 degrees C, and the radio down to -30. The data sheet gives no charge times, so ask your dealer which charger fits your pack.
Channels, privacy codes and which radios it talks to
DMR (digital mobile radio) is a business radio standard from ETSI. It shares one 12.5 kHz channel between two calls, using two time slots. Its tiers say what kind of system a radio is for.
| DMR tier | What it is | Licensed |
|---|---|---|
| Tier I | Consumer and small business, 446 MHz, 0.5 W, no repeaters | No |
| Tier II | Conventional: you pick a channel, as with analog, and may add repeaters | Yes |
| Tier III | Trunked: the system picks a free channel for each call | Yes |
The R7 supports Tier II and Tier III, plus analog and 5-Tone. Motorola's system names include IP Site Connect, Capacity Plus and Capacity Max. The DMR vs analog guide explains the time slots, and the business radio systems guide shows how repeaters and trunking fit a site.
The full-keypad R7 holds 1,000 channels and the no-keypad R7 holds 64. A digital radio calls by radio ID and talkgroup, a number for a team, not by an analog tone.
Basic and Enhanced Privacy come on every R7, and AES256 encryption is an option. A radio without the matching key cannot make sense of the call.
The R7 talks to radios on the same band and mode: DMR to DMR, analog to analog. DMR is an open standard, so radios from different makers can in principle share a conventional digital channel.
Extras such as trunking belong to each maker, so test one pair first. The compatibility tool covers the basics.
A new radio needs programming before it can call. Programming loads channels, contacts, groups and button functions.
Motorola lists CPS 2.0 and Radio Management for this, plus programming over the air. A grey lightbar means the radio is unprogrammed or not connected.
Where the Motorola R7 is legal
The R7 is a licensed radio, because it works on VHF, UHF and 350 MHz business bands. The data sheet is the EMEA edition. Motorola says these models are sold in its EMEA region only, so check the version your dealer supplies.
A company asks its national regulator for a business license. Four countries show the range.
| Country | Business radio license | What the regulator says |
|---|---|---|
| US | Part 90 Industrial/Business Pool | Companies, schools, clinics and clergy groups are eligible |
| UK | Business Radio Simple UK Light, 75 pounds for 5 years | 5 W ERP on 19 shared frequencies, no base stations |
| Germany | Individual frequency assignment | One-time fee plus a yearly contribution; two digital channels are license-free for retail and logistics sites at 2 W ERP indoors |
| Netherlands | Shared-frequency license | 271 euros once, then 102 euros a year |
The German free channels need low power, and the R7 has a 1 W setting. The license guide covers other countries.
Build, water and controls
IP68 means dust cannot get in and the radio survives immersion. Motorola rates it for 2 m of water for 2 hours. IP66 adds protection from strong jets.
The radio measures 131.8 by 56 by 34.7 mm with the 2200 mAh slim pack.
The full-keypad version has a 2.4 inch colour screen with up to 10 lines of text. The no-keypad version has no screen.
To switch on, turn the On/Off/Volume knob until it clicks. The LED glows solid green while it starts. Turn the Channel Selector knob to change channel.
The emergency button sits on top, the push-to-talk button on the left, and three side buttons carry one, two and three dots.
The full-keypad home screen has a lightbar. Light blue means free to call, yellow means receiving, and red means transmitting. That version has 6 programmable buttons and the no-keypad version has 4.
The accessory port is a GCAI-Mini connector on the right side. Bluetooth 5.2 links one audio accessory and up to four data devices within 10 m. It comes with Premium and is optional on Capable.
The data sheet names no earpiece part numbers, so ask your dealer which ones fit.
Limits of the Motorola R7
Motorola publishes no range figure and no charge time. The controls come from Motorola's 2022 quick reference guide, because the full user guide sits behind a Motorola login.
The R7a is the entry version, sold with no keypad only. It has no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GNSS tracking, Man Down, audio recording or dual-microphone noise cancellation, and it has 4 programmable buttons.
The no-keypad R7 has no screen and sends only canned text messages. Free-form text and work order ticketing need the full keypad. The data sheet names no ATEX certification, only the US and Canadian UL standard.
