Motorola Talkabout T82 Extreme: range, battery, IPX4 and controls

The Motorola Talkabout T82 Extreme is a PMR446 walkie-talkie for Europe and the UK. Motorola claims up to 10 km and 18 hours on its 800 mAh battery, and the radio has 16 channels and an IPX4 rating. In a town expect a few hundred meters, because the 10 km figure is a best case.

Motorola Talkabout T82 Extreme at a glance

The T82 Extreme is a license-free walkie-talkie from Motorola's Talkabout line. It uses PMR446, a radio service at 446 MHz that needs no license in most of Europe.

It suits families, hikers and small groups who want a rechargeable radio that shrugs off rain. The one thing to know: Motorola's 10 km claim is a best case, and a town gives you hundreds of meters.

The Extreme is the T82 with a better water rating. Motorola lists the plain T82 at IPX2, in orange and black, and the Extreme at IPX4, in yellow and black.

The other specs match. The twin pack of the Extreme adds a carry case, two lanyards and two earpieces.

Who the T82 Extreme is for

Pick it for a family trip, a campsite, a ski day or a walk where you split up for an hour. The radio is simple: a knob, a push-to-talk button and a handful of menu keys. For younger children, best kids' walkie-talkies lists radios made for them.

It also works for a small shop or a building site. PMR446 allows business use in the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Spain.

But the T82 Extreme is a leisure radio with an IPX4 rating. A team that works every day should look at the Motorola XT420 below, which has IP55 and a MIL-STD 810 design rating, or at business two-way radios.

Pick something else if you need a radio that floats or survives a dunk. The T92 H2O has IP67 and floats face up with its included battery.

Both are covered in Motorola Talkabout models compared. And if you live in the US, the Talkabout T800 is the FRS radio for you; the T82 Extreme will not work there.

Motorola T82 Extreme range: the claim and real use

Motorola claims up to 10 km, "subject to terrain and conditions". That distance needs two radios in sight of each other across open ground. A hill, a building or a line of trees cuts it hard.

The law caps the radio at 0.5 W, and the antenna is built in. So all PMR446 radios start from the same power. A regulator simulation for 95 percent of connections gives about 90 to 130 m in towns and suburbs and 0.7 to 1 km in the countryside.

A standard radio model gives a similar picture. These are calculated figures, not field tests. Each range runs from the 90 percent case to the 50 percent case of locations:

  • Open land: 770 m to 1.3 km.
  • Suburb: 550 to 920 m.
  • Town center, between buildings: 370 to 620 m.

Woods are harder. I found no published PMR446 figure for forests, so plan for less than open land.

A Latvian radio regulator says a few hundred meters in a city and up to a few kilometers in the countryside. Work out your own case with the walkie-talkie range tool.

Motorola T82 Extreme battery and charging

Motorola claims up to 18 hours from the included 800 mAh NiMH pack. NiMH is a rechargeable battery type.

The figure assumes a 5/5/90 cycle: 5 percent of the time talking, 5 percent listening and 90 percent waiting. If you talk more, the radio runs fewer hours.

The radio also takes three AA alkaline batteries, so you can swap in spares on a long trip. A bigger 1300 mAh pack is an optional accessory. I found no runtime figure for AA cells in the maker's documents.

Charging uses micro-USB. An empty pack fills in 8 hours, the manual says.

The twin pack comes with a mains charger that has two micro-USB plugs, and a drop-in dock is sold separately. The radio shows three battery bars and chirps when one bar is left.

Channels, privacy codes and which radios it talks to

The T82 Extreme has 16 PMR446 channels between 446.00625 and 446.19375 MHz. A new radio starts with channels 1 to 8.

To switch on 9 to 16, open the channel menu and hold both Scroll buttons for 3 seconds. The display then shows "16 CH".

Each channel has 121 privacy codes: 38 CTCSS and 83 DCS. A CTCSS code is a quiet tone that opens the speaker only for your group. DCS does the same with a digital signal.

Code 0 turns the filter off. A code does not make a call private; anyone with the code off still hears you.

The radio talks to any PMR446 radio on the same channel and code. Motorola's own T92 H2O sheet says that radio works with any PMR446 radio.

If you use channels 9 to 16, every radio in the group needs them switched on. Tones 1 to 38 follow a common list across brands, while DCS numbers can differ, so check a pair with the privacy code tool or the radio type tool.

Easy Pairing saves setup time. Hold the button on the member radios until a beep, then hold it on the leader radio until a double beep. The leader sends its channel and code to the others.

PMR446 is license-free in the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy. Radios must be hand-held with a built-in antenna and stay at 0.5 W. Ofcom, the German regulator and the French regulator all publish the rule.

The US and Canada do not have PMR446. In the US, 446 MHz sits inside a ham radio band. Do not take the radio there.

Motorola also says channels 9 to 16 are only for countries that allow them, and Russia limits users to 8 channels. Rules change, so see do you need a license for a walkie-talkie for your country.

Build, water and controls

The radio weighs 197 g with belt clip and battery, and measures 57 by 181 by 33 mm. IPX4 has two parts. The X means Motorola gives no dust rating.

The 4 means water splashed from any direction does no harm. Rain is fine; a dunk in a lake is not.

To switch on, turn the Volume/Power knob clockwise. To change channel, press Menu until the channel number flashes, press a Scroll key to change it, then press PTT to save. Hold PTT to talk, with the radio 2 to 3 cm from your mouth.

Other controls, all from the manual:

  • Lock: hold it to lock the keys; hold again to unlock.
  • Scan/Monitor: press to scan; hold 3 seconds to listen for weak signals.
  • Call Tone: sends one of 20 tones to your group.
  • Flashlight: the LED light stays on while you hold the button.
  • Emergency: hold 3 seconds for a warbling tone on group radios, then 22 seconds of hands-free talk.

The display is a small segmented screen. It dims 5 seconds after your last key press and goes dark 5 seconds later.

Any button except the flashlight wakes it. A 2.5 mm jack takes a headset, and iVOX starts sending when you speak, with levels L1 to L3.

Limits of the T82 Extreme

The T82 Extreme does not float, and IPX4 does not cover submersion. The maker's manual lists no weather channels and no Bluetooth. Charging is micro-USB, not USB-C.

Only 8 channels work out of the box, and a group that mixes radios with and without channels 9 to 16 must stay on 1 to 8. The manual gives no operating temperature. The data sheet dates from 2017 and the manual from 2020, and every figure here is Motorola's, not a measurement of mine.
