Digital two-way radio vs analog radio: what changes with DMR

A digital two-way radio (DMR) fits two talk paths into one 12.5 kHz channel, adds text and radio IDs, and makers claim about a third more battery life, for example 26.5 hours against 19.5 on the Motorola R2. Analog radios still work, and a dual-mode radio can use both. You can move to digital one channel at a time.

Digital two-way radio vs analog radio: what changes

An analog radio sends your voice as a plain FM signal. A digital two-way radio turns your voice into data first. Most business digital radios use one standard, DMR, and it fits into the same 12.5 kHz channel that analog radios use.123

What stays the same when you go digital

You still press a button to talk and release it to listen. You still pick a channel with a knob, and a business channel still needs a license.

The channel is the same width. DMR was built to sit in the 12.5 kHz channels that licensed business radio already uses, so you keep the channel you have.12 The DMR Association says this means no new license for the channel.1

The bands are the same too. The Motorola R2 comes as an analog-only radio or an analog and digital radio, both on VHF and UHF.8

Two talk paths on one channel

DMR splits one 12.5 kHz channel into two time slots. Each slot is its own talk path, so two calls can run at the same time on one channel.1

A repeater runs both slots. Radio to radio, the DMR Association lists a mode that uses both slots, and Motorola sells it as Dual Capacity Direct Mode.16 Check that every radio in your group has it before you plan on two paths.

The front desk and the kitchen can each have a path on one channel and one license, and they no longer wait for each other.

Clearer audio at the edge of range

The DMR Association says DMR keeps voice clearer than analog at the far edge of range, because the radio finds and fixes transmission errors.1 Motorola makes a similar claim for its CP100d series.6

The P25 group, which makes a different digital standard, adds the other half. A digital receiver gives good audio to a greater distance and then stops almost at once, while an analog signal fades into hiss but can still be faintly heard.5

Expect clean audio up to the edge and then nothing. Test your farthest spot with the radios you plan to buy.

Battery life that makers claim

Makers measure battery life with a standard day: 5 percent of the time talking, 5 percent listening and 90 percent idle, at full power. Here are three radios that list both modes on the same battery.

RadioBatteryAnalogDigital

Motorola MOTOTRBO CP100d2250 mAh15 h720 h7
Hytera PD4051500 mAh12 h916 h9

The gain is about a third in all three rows. The reason is simple: a digital call uses one of the two time slots, so the transmitter rests half the time.1

Text, radio IDs and alerts on a digital radio

In DMR, every radio and every group has an ID, so the system knows who is calling and who is being called. The standard has group calls to a whole team and private calls to one person.3

Makers build on this. The Hytera PD405 sends an emergency alarm that shows who pressed it, lets a dispatcher see when a radio is switched on or off, and lets other users check if a radio is available.9 It can also disable a lost radio from afar.9

Short preset text messages are a digital feature, as the R2 data sheet marks them.8 The PD405 stores them through its programming software.9

Narrowband vs wideband channels

Narrowband and wideband are two channel widths. In business radio, wideband is 25 kHz and narrowband is 12.5 kHz, and DMR is a narrowband system.24

The analog radio standard names three channel widths: 12.5, 20 and 25 kHz.4 In the US, all land mobile systems in the VHF and UHF bands, analog ones included, must now use 12.5 kHz channels.5

Germany is moving the same way.

Business radio assignments that had no end date were given one: most end on 31 December 2028, and a few ended on 31 December 2025. The change is tied to leaving 20 kHz channels for the 12.5 kHz grid.14 Check the width your radios and your license use today.

Mixed fleets: dual-mode radios and mixed-mode repeaters

An analog radio cannot make sense of a digital call, and a radio set to a digital channel cannot make sense of an analog one.610 To mix, you need one of two things.

A dual-mode radio has an analog mode and a digital mode, and you pick one per channel.

Motorola says its CP100d works next to existing analog radios so you can move to digital at your own pace.6 The Hytera PD405 can detect which signal arrives and switch by itself.9 The R2 can be bought as analog-only and upgraded to dual-mode later.8

A mixed-mode repeater runs analog, digital or both on one system. The Motorola SLR 8000 repeater is sold for that: it can run mixed while you leave an old analog system.10

So the plan is short. Buy dual-mode radios when you add or replace radios, keep your channels on analog at first, and switch channels to digital one at a time. The radio type compatibility tool shows which pairs can talk.

Cost of digital radios

The table shows dealer prices seen in October 2026 for radios that do analog, DMR or both.

The XT420 is analog on PMR446, and the BD505LF is a license-free DMR radio on PMR446. The R2, PD405 and R5 can run analog and DMR, and the R7 adds trunked DMR (Tier III) for larger systems.

The DMR Association says DMR radios run on the channels a license holder already has, with no new license for the channel.1 License fees are set country by country.

License rules for digital radios

On a licensed channel you keep the same business license. In Germany the application asks for the technical specification and the system code numbers when digital users share a frequency. Conventional digital business radio is applied for as DMR Tier II or dPMR Mode 1 or 2.13

License-free digital radio exists too. DMR Tier I, called DMR446, works on the PMR446 channels at up to 0.5 W with no repeaters, and the DMR Association names small retail among its uses.2 Hytera sells the BD505LF for it.11

Do not program a licensed DMR radio onto PMR446 channels. Latvia's regulator, for one, says licensed radios may not be reprogrammed as PMR446 sets.12 For every country, see do you need a license for a walkie-talkie.

Which to choose: digital or analog

Choose digital when you want any of these:

  • Radio IDs, alerts or text.
  • Two groups on one licensed channel.
  • Longer battery life, which makers claim at about a third more.
  • A fleet that can add data later, because you are replacing radios anyway.

Choose analog when your group is small and simple, when every radio must talk to any FM radio on the channel, or when you use license-free PMR446 and need nothing more. An analog fleet that works needs no change.

Choose dual-mode when you have both. Start on analog channels and move to digital later, at your own pace.6

Questions

Is a digital two-way radio better than analog?

It depends on the job. Digital adds two talk paths on one channel, radio IDs, text and about a third more battery life by makers' claims.18 Analog is simpler and talks to any FM radio on the channel.

Can digital and analog radios talk to each other?

Only through a radio with both modes. A dual-mode DMR radio set to an analog channel talks to analog radios, and a mixed-mode repeater can serve both.610

What is the difference between narrowband and wideband radio?

Channel width. Narrowband is 12.5 kHz and wideband is 25 kHz. US land mobile systems must use 12.5 kHz channels in VHF and UHF.45

Do digital radios reach farther?

At the edge, the DMR Association says digital voice stays clearer.1 The P25 group adds that digital audio stops sharply at the limit, while analog fades into noise.5

Do I need a new license for digital?

A DMR channel uses the same 12.5 kHz width, and the DMR Association says no new license is needed for the channel.1 Some regulators ask for the digital system on the form, as in Germany.13

What is a digital walkie-talkie?

A hand-held radio that sends voice as data. License-free ones use DMR446 or dPMR446 on the PMR446 channels, and licensed ones use DMR on business channels.211
