Best PMR446 walkie-talkies in our data
PMR446 radios are the license-free walkie-talkies of the EU and the UK. The table lists the six PMR446 radios in our data, sorted by the range the maker claims. A claim is the maker's best case, so use it to compare radios and read the range section below before you buy. Battery, power, water rating and an approximate price with its date are in the same table.
| Radio | Claimed range | Claimed battery | Power | Water and dust | Approx. price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Motorola Talkabout T82 Extreme | 10 km | 18 h | 0.5 W | IPX4 | ≈ €74–84 2-pack · Oct 2026 |
| Motorola Talkabout T92 H2O | 10 km | 17 h | 0.5 W | IP67 | ≈ €90 2-pack · Oct 2026 |
| Midland XT50 PRO | 8 km | 12 h | 0.5 W | IPX2 | ≈ €85 2-pack · Oct 2026 |
| Motorola Talkabout T62 | 8 km | 18 h | 0.5 W | — | ≈ €44–93 2-pack · Oct 2026 |
| Motorola Talkabout T42 | 4 km | 18 h | 0.5 W | — | ≈ €27–31 2-pack · Oct 2026 |
| Retevis RB648 | 2 km | 12 h | 0.5 W | IP67 | — |
Here is what sets the six apart, using the makers' own pages and manuals:
- Motorola Talkabout T92 H2O. IP67, which Motorola describes as surviving submersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. It floats face up with the included rechargeable battery and charges over USB-C. Motorola claims up to 10 km and 17 hours of battery.1
- Motorola Talkabout T82 Extreme. Weatherproof to IPX4, with a torch, an emergency button and a rechargeable pack included. Motorola claims up to 10 km and 18 hours.2
- Motorola Talkabout T62. A rechargeable pack is included, and the radio also runs on three AA batteries. Motorola claims up to 8 km and 18 hours.3
- Motorola Talkabout T42. Runs on three AAA batteries, which are not included. Motorola claims up to 4 km and about 18 hours on alkaline cells.4
- Midland XT50 PRO. Midland says 8 km "in open space, without obstructions and in sight". It carries 16 PMR446 channels and 69 channels of a second band, LPD at 433 MHz, which Midland says can be subject to national restrictions. Midland lists IPX2 and up to 12 hours.5
- Retevis RB648. Retevis lists IP67 and a 2 km "communication distance".6
What PMR446 is
PMR446 stands for Private Mobile Radio on 446 MHz. It is a radio band, 446.0 to 446.2 MHz, that European regulators opened to everyone. The decision exempts these radios from individual licenses, so there is no license to buy and nothing to register.7 The UK does the same through an Ofcom license exemption, Germany through a general assignment from the Bundesnetzagentur, and France through a general authorization.8910
The rules are the same everywhere you go. The radio must be hand-held, with an antenna built into the case, and it is limited to 0.5 W ERP, the power measured at the antenna. Base stations and repeaters are not allowed.7 A radio with a removable antenna or a booster does not fit those rules.
You can talk with any PMR446 radio of any brand. You set the same channel and the same privacy code, and you are connected. The channels and privacy codes page shows how.
PMR446 is not a US service. 446 MHz sits inside the US 70 cm amateur band, and the US counterpart is FRS, covered in FRS and GMRS walkie-talkies.11 Ofcom says US FRS sets cannot be used license-exempt in the UK.12 Whether you need a license in another country is on do you need a license for a walkie-talkie.
Regulators are studying a rise to 1 W, and a CEPT report from January 2026 finds the band has room for it. Until the decision is revised and each country adopts it, the limit stays 0.5 W.13
PMR446 range: what the box says and what to expect
Every PMR446 radio is held to 0.5 W and a built-in antenna, so a bigger number on the box cannot come from more power. It comes from the test setup: a hilltop, a clear view, no buildings. Motorola adds a note such as "subject to terrain and conditions" next to its claims.42
What people report is shorter. The Latvian spectrum regulator says a few hundred meters in a city and up to a few kilometers in the countryside.14 Wikipedia gives the same picture, with many kilometers only between hilltops.15 A radio club that tested PMR446 on flat ground called 500 m in the open a good rule of thumb and a mile the best routine contact.16
In that test the height of the antenna mattered most, so climbing the slope beats buying a radio with a bigger claim.16 The estimator below gives a range for your place: pick PMR446 and where you are.

Pick your radios and where you use them. You get the distance most calls get through, standing at head height.
How to choose PMR446 walkie-talkies
Four things decide it: the battery, the water rating, the pack size and the channels. Range comes last, because every PMR446 radio is held to the same 0.5 W.
PMR446 battery life
The makers' hours come from a 5/5/90 cycle: 5% of the time talking, 5% listening and 90% waiting.5 In real use, with more talking, expect less. A rechargeable pack saves buying batteries, and a radio that also takes AA or AAA batteries gives you a backup. The T62 and T82 accept three AA batteries, and the T42 runs on three AAA.324
PMR446 waterproofing: IP ratings
IP ratings have two digits. The first is dust and the second is water. Water digit 2 means drips falling on a tilted case, 4 means splashes from any direction, and 7 means temporary immersion for 30 minutes.17 Midland lists the XT50 PRO as IPX2, Motorola lists the T82 Extreme as IPX4 and the T92 H2O as IP67, and Retevis lists the RB648 as IP67.5216 For rain, IPX4 is the minimum to look for. For a kayak or a beach, take IP67.
PMR446 packs and pairs
PMR446 radios are sold in packs of two, three or four, and the prices in the table are per pack. Buy the pack that matches the number of people, and compare the pack size before the price. Radios of other brands talk to yours as long as the channel and the code match.
PMR446 channels
Current PMR446 radios have 16 analog channels.7 Older radios built before 2016 have 8 channels, on the same frequencies as channels 1-8 today.18 The Motorola models above start on channels 1-8 and let you switch on 9-16.32 All 16 are allowed in the UK and the EU, and if one of your radios is older, stay on 1-8.7

Analog or digital PMR446
Most PMR446 radios are analog FM, and any analog radio talks to any other. Digital PMR446 comes in two kinds, DMR446 and dPMR446. They share the band but not the signal, so they cannot talk to each other, and neither talks to an analog radio in digital mode.19 The regulator lists better audio, better battery life, a clearer signal out to the edge of the range and short text messages as the reasons for digital. It does not list more distance.7
Some digital radios also have an analog mode that talks to analog PMR446 radios. Kenwood says its ProTalk Digital radios work in digital and analog modes.20 If your group has mixed brands or children's radios, buy analog. Buy digital only when every radio in the group is the same digital model. The radio type compatibility tool checks any pair, and types of two-way radio explains the rest.

Questions
Do I need a license for a PMR446 walkie-talkie?
No. PMR446 radios are exempt from individual licenses in the EU and the UK, so there is no fee and no registration.78
What is the PMR446 power limit?
0.5 W ERP, with a built-in antenna and no repeaters. A rise to 1 W is being studied and is not in force.713
How far do PMR446 radios reach?
Makers claim 2-10 km under ideal conditions. Regulators and radio clubs report a few hundred meters in a town and up to a few kilometers on open land.1416
Can I use PMR446 in the USA?
No. PMR446 has no service in the US, and 446 MHz is in the amateur band there. FRS is the US license-free service.11
