Hytera PD405 at a glance
The Hytera PD405 is a licensed digital two-way radio for teams. It works in DMR, the digital standard most business radios share, and in analog. It has no screen and no keypad, and Hytera aims it at manufacturing, facilities management and education.
The one thing to know: your dealer sets up the channels and the two side keys, so you change little on the radio itself.
The PD41X sibling adds an RFID reader for patrol rounds and is a separate model.
Who the Hytera PD405 is for
It suits a school, a plant, a hotel or a yard, where teams need plain voice and a few safety tools.
Security guards can use Emergency mode, which sends a top-priority alarm showing the ID of the person who raised it. A receive-only earpiece keeps a quiet post quiet.
Logistics and event crews get 3 zones of channels, so each area can have its own set.
Pick something else if you need a screen, location tracking or a fall alert. Hytera's EU page lists no GPS, Bluetooth or Man Down for the PD405. The Motorola R7 in the comparison below offers all three.
Hytera PD405 range: the claim and real use
Hytera publishes no range figure for the PD405. It gives power: UHF 4 W on high and 1 W on low, VHF 5 W and 1 W. A 4 W UHF radio sends eight times the 0.5 W that PMR446 allows.
This site's range model puts a 4 W UHF handheld at 1.6 to 2.7 km on open land and 1.2 to 1.9 km in a suburb. In a town centre it gives 0.8 to 1.3 km. The lower figure holds in nine places out of ten, and the higher one in half.
These are model results, not measurements. No source gives a figure for a forest, so test your own route. The range tool gives a first estimate for your site.
Hytera PD405 battery and charging
Hytera rates battery life for a typical day: 5 percent talking, 5 percent listening and 90 percent idle, at high transmit power.
The standard pack is a 1500 mAh lithium-ion battery (BL1504). A 2000 mAh pack (BL2010) is an option, and the page lists no AA option.
| Battery pack | Analog | Digital |
|---|---|---|
| 1500 mAh BL1504, standard | 12 h | 16 h |
| 2000 mAh BL2010, optional | 16 h | 22 h |
Digital hours are higher because a digital call uses one of the two time slots, so the transmitter rests between bursts. If your team talks more than 5 percent of the time, expect fewer hours.
A desktop charger (CH10A07), an EU and UK power adapter (PS1044) and a multi-unit charger unit (POA59) are standard accessories. Options include the multi-unit chargers MCA08 and MCL32, a dual pocket charger kit (CH10A06) and a vehicle power adapter (CHV09).
Channels, privacy codes and which radios it talks to
DMR (digital mobile radio) is a business radio standard from ETSI. It shares one 12.5 kHz channel between two calls, using two time slots. The DMR vs analog guide explains this.
DMR has three tiers. Tier I is license-free at 446 MHz and 0.5 W. Tier II is licensed and conventional: you pick a channel, as with analog.
Tier III is licensed and trunked, so the system picks a free channel for each call. The PD405 is a conventional radio, the Tier II kind.
It holds 48 channels in 3 zones, up to 16 channels per zone. A zone is a group of channels for one site or team.
Each channel is analog or digital, and the Channel Selector knob switches between them. In mixed mode the radio detects the signal and changes mode itself.
On a digital channel, one press calls a contact your dealer presets: one person, a group or everyone. A call to everyone is an All Call, and listeners cannot answer it.
| Hytera feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Radio check | Lets another user see if your radio is available |
| Radio Register Service | Lets a dispatch program see when a radio is on or off |
| Roaming | Switches the radio between sites on a multi-site system |
| Stun / Unstun | Disables or enables a radio from afar |
| Quick text | Sends a short message loaded in advance |
| Pseudo trunking | Uses the second time slot when the first is busy |
Hytera lists audio encryption without naming the type, and the manual describes a Scrambler/Encrypt key.
The PD405 talks to DMR radios on the same band and settings, and to analog radios in analog mode. Radios from other makers can in principle share a conventional digital channel, but each maker's extras are its own. Test a pair first, and see the compatibility tool.
Programming loads channels, zones, contacts and key functions into the radio. Hytera's EU page calls the tool Customer Programming Software. The cable is the PC76, USB to a 2-pin interface, and it screws into the accessory jack.
The product page has no public download, and the manual says the dealer programs the keys. Ask your dealer for the software.
Where the Hytera PD405 is legal
The PD405 is a licensed radio, listed by Hytera under DMR two-way radios. It comes as a VHF model (136 to 174 MHz) or a UHF model (400 to 470 MHz). Pick the one that covers your licensed frequency.
Dealers in the UK and France sell it, and Hytera's pages show no US edition. A company asks its regulator for a business license.
| Country | Business radio license | What the regulator says |
|---|---|---|
| UK | Business Radio Simple UK Light, 75 pounds for 5 years | 5 W ERP on 19 shared frequencies, no base stations |
| Germany | Individual frequency assignment | One-time fee plus a yearly contribution; two digital channels are license-free for retail and logistics sites at 2 W ERP indoors |
| Netherlands | Shared-frequency license | 271 euros once, then 102 euros a year |
| France | Individual authorization, shared-use option | 17 simplex and 5 duplex channels, yearly fees, no protection from interference |
The license guide covers other countries. The business radio systems guide shows how licenses, repeaters and sites fit together.
Build, water and controls
IP55 has two parts. The first 5 means dust may get in, but not enough to harm the radio. The second 5 means water jets from any direction do no harm.
It is not rated for immersion. Hytera also lists MIL-STD-810G.
The radio weighs 270 g with the 1500 mAh battery and measures 112 by 54 by 28 mm. It works from -30 to +60 degrees C. The manual warns that a plugged-in accessory can affect waterproofing.
The controls come from the manual of the sibling PD41X, because no PD405 manual was available. The top has the On-Off/Volume knob, the Channel Selector knob and an LED. The left side has the PTT key and two programmable keys, SK1 and SK2.
To switch on, turn the On-Off/Volume knob clockwise until it clicks, and the LED flashes green. Turn the Channel Selector knob to change channel.
Hold the radio 2.5 to 5 cm from your mouth. A green glow means receiving, red means transmitting, and a slow green flash means scanning.
Earpieces and microphones plug into the accessory jack. Hytera lists these for the PD405:
| Type | Models | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Receive-only | ES-01 earbud, ES-02 and EAS03 with clear tube, EH-01 earloop, EH-02 swivel | You hear calls and talk into the radio |
| With microphone | EHM15-A and EHM18-A earsets with VOX, ESM12 earbud with PTT and VOX | You talk through the earset |
| Remote speaker microphone | SM13M1, SM26M1 (IP54), SM50M1 | A speaker and microphone on a lead, with its own talk button |
| Cable | ACM-01 PTT and mic cable | Wired audio |
VOX is voice-operated transmit: the radio sends when you speak, with no button pressed. The accessories guide explains how to choose.
Limits of the Hytera PD405
It has no screen and no keypad, so you cannot see a contact name or type a message. Quick text messages are preset in the software. Hytera's EU page does not state GPS, Bluetooth, Man Down or Lone Worker.
Hytera does not say which encryption it uses, and it names no explosive-atmosphere certification. It states no release year or successor.
Hytera's EU page links no data sheet or manual. The PD40X and PD41X owner's manual covers the series, and the controls above come from it.
Dealers disagree on the channel count, with some saying 32 and others 256. Hytera's pages say 48.
