About pmr-radio.net

pmr-radio.net is a plain-language guide to walkie-talkies and two-way radios: what kinds there are, which ones can talk to each other, what needs a license and how to set them up. Max Streltcoff writes it. Every number has a source, and the site sells nothing.

What you find on pmr-radio.net

  • Radio types — license-free walkie-talkies, GMRS, business radios, public safety, ham and marine radios, and which ones can talk to each other.
  • Radios for home and the outdoors — how to choose a pair for a trip, a family or a hike, and how far they really reach.
  • Radios for work — business radio systems, analog and digital radios, licenses for companies.
  • Setup — channels, privacy codes, licenses by country.
  • Tools — a privacy code matcher, a radio type checker, a license checker and a range estimator. They answer one question each and work in the browser.

Who writes pmr-radio.net

Max Streltcoff writes and checks every page. Push-to-talk services, Privox among them, are described by the same rules as everything else on the site.

Where the facts come from

Each fact on a page comes from a source: a maker's page or manual, a regulator such as the FCC, Ofcom or CEPT, or a standard. The sources are listed at the end of every page.

We do not test radios. Claimed range and battery life are the makers' own figures, shown as claims. Range numbers in the tools come from a model built on international propagation rules, not from our own measurements.

The site sells nothing and has no shop links, ads or paid placements. Where a page shows a price, it is an approximate price seen in shops, with the month it was seen, so you can compare radios. A maker cannot buy a place on a list; if you see a wrong fact, write to us from the contact page.
