Walkie-talkie earpiece: what has to match
Three things decide whether an earpiece works with your radio. They are the connector, the type of earpiece, and whether it is wired or Bluetooth.
Open the radio's manual first. Find the accessory socket and read its name. That name decides which earpieces fit, and the rest of this page explains what the names mean.
Some packs include earpieces. The Hobby and Work version of the Midland XT50 PRO lists two earphone mikes in the box.1
Earpiece connectors: 1-pin, 2-pin, K1 and multi-pin
A connector is the plug and socket pair that joins an accessory to the radio. Makers use different ones, and the same name can hide different wiring.
| Connector | What it is | Radios in the sources |
|---|---|---|
| Single 2.5 mm jack (1-pin) | One small round plug | Talkabout T800 and T82 Extreme list a 2.5 mm headset jack.23 The Retevis RB48 has a 2.5 mm 1-pin jack.4 |
| 3.5 mm plug | A receive-only plug | Motorola lists a 3.5 mm receive-only earpiece.5 |
| 2-pin | Two plugs: a 3.5 mm speaker plug and a 2.5 mm microphone plug | The XT50 PRO has a 2-pin jack, with a stereo 2.5 mm microphone and a mono 3.5 mm speaker.1 The Motorola XT420 has an "Audio Accessory 2 Pin Connector".6 Kenwood lists a twin-wire 2-pin headset with PTT.7 |
| K1 | A dual-pin 3.5 mm and 2.5 mm jack | Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio.8 |
| M3 | A waterproof "blade type" connector, screwed on | Rocky Talkie Expedition Radio.9 |
| Universal or multi-pin | One wider socket for audio and other accessories | The Motorola DP3441e has a universal connector on the antenna side.10 Kenwood lists multi-pin headsets.7 |
A name is not a promise of fit. Kenwood lists 1-pin, 2-pin and multi-pin headsets as separate families.7 Check the radio's own accessory list, not only the plug name.
Hytera's PD41X guide shows a screw-fixed accessory jack. You open the cover, line up the plug and tighten its screw.11
Accessory ports and water
An open accessory port lets water in. The Talkabout T800 is rated IP-X4 only when the headset port cover is sealed, and Motorola says to use a headset in dry places only.12 The Talkabout T600 is IP-67 only with the battery cover and headset port sealed.13
Business radios say the same. Hytera warns that an external accessory can affect the waterproof performance.11 Motorola rates the DP3441e at IP54 only with the universal connector cover fitted.10 Icom says the IC-F52D holds IP67 only with the connector cover or an IP microphone fitted.14
Earpiece types: receive-only, tube, headset and speaker microphone
Makers sell the same few shapes under different names. The table lists each shape with an example from a maker's own page.
| Type | How it works | Example from a maker |
|---|---|---|
| Receive-only earpiece | Sound in only. You talk into the radio | Hytera Receive-Only Earbud ES-01 and C-style earloop EH-01.11 Motorola 3.5 mm receive-only earpiece.5 |
| Earpiece with microphone and PTT | A microphone and PTT button sit on the cable | Hytera earbud with on-mic PTT EAM12.11 Motorola surveillance earpiece with in-line microphone and PTT.5 |
| Acoustic tube earpiece | Sound travels through a clear tube to the ear | Hytera EAM17.11 Motorola's 2-wire kit has replaceable translucent acoustic tubing.15 |
| 2-wire and 3-wire kit | Separate wires for each job | Motorola: two wires are one for receiving and one for transmitting. Three wires are separate for transmitting, receiving and PTT.16 |
| "D" earpiece with boom microphone | An ear loop shaped like the letter D, with a boom microphone | Kenwood KHS-35F.7 |
| Headset | Over the head, with a boom microphone and in-line PTT | Motorola headsets have noise-cancelling boom microphones.16 |
| Speaker microphone | Clips on a collar or strap and holds speaker, microphone and PTT | Motorola offers wind-ported and noise-cancelling versions.16 Kenwood lists a heavy-duty KMC-45D.17 |
| Throat microphone | Picks up the voice from the throat | Motorola's Tactical Throat Microphone needs an interface module.18 |
The throat microphone picks up the voice directly from the vocal chords, which suits noisy places, and Motorola says it needs interface module PMLN6765 or PMLN6827.18 The XT420 guide lists a remote speaker microphone, a headset with swivel boom microphone, an earbud with clip PTT microphone and a lightweight headset.6
VOX and PTT with a walkie-talkie earpiece
A PTT button on the cable or earpiece works like the button on the radio. On the Retevis RB48, the PTT button on the headset transmits.4 On the Talkabout T600, a headset with a PTT button transmits through the headset microphone, and the radio's own PTT still works with the radio's microphone.13
VOX starts a call when the radio hears your voice. With a VOX headset on the T600, the headset microphone detects the voice.13 The T800 shows the VOX icon when an audio accessory is plugged in.12 On the XT50 PRO, you move a small switch on the headset to VOX, and back to PTT when you do not use VOX.1 Levels and delays are in how to use a walkie-talkie.
Plug in with the radio off, as Motorola advises for the XT420, and lower the volume before the accessory goes near your ear.6 A connected headset also mutes the radio's own speaker on the T600.13 Motorola advises limiting the time at high volume.12
Bluetooth on walkie-talkies
Bluetooth removes the cable between radio and earpiece. It is a business-radio feature, and the details vary by radio.
- The Motorola DP3441e supports up to three Bluetooth connections of different types at once, such as a headset, a scanner, a sensor and a PTT-only device. The range is 10 m (33 ft).10
- Motorola says its Bluetooth accessories let you stay connected up to 30 feet (9 m) from the radio.16
- Motorola lists a Bluetooth earpiece with a PTT button and a Bluetooth control pod with an acoustic tube earpiece.5
- The Hytera HP785 has built-in Bluetooth 5.0, with a Bluetooth earpiece among its uses and an optional ring PTT.19
The word "Bluetooth" on a consumer radio does not mean a wireless headset. The Talkabout T800 uses Bluetooth only to link the radio to a phone app for data, and Motorola says it is not used for a Bluetooth headset.12 Read what the manual says the Bluetooth does.
Walkie-talkie antenna rules: where you can change it
Check the rule for your radio's service first. License-free services fix the antenna to the radio. Many licensed business radios use a removable antenna from the maker.
| Radio or service | Antenna rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| FRS (US) | The antenna must be a non-removable integral part of the transmitter, with gain no higher than a half-wave dipole | 47 CFR 95.587(b)20 |
| GMRS hand-held that sends digital data (US) | The antenna must be a non-removable integral part of the unit | 47 CFR 95.1787(a)(4)21 |
| PMR446 (CEPT countries) | Integral antenna only: a fixed part with no external connector, which a user cannot disconnect to fit another | ECC/DEC/(15)0522 |
| PMR446 (UK) | Hand-portable sets with built-in antennas | Ofcom IR 203023 |
| Licensed business radio | Often a removable antenna, from the maker | Maker manuals1014 |
On an FRS, PMR446 or similar radio, leave the antenna alone. The rule makes it a fixed part of the radio, so a longer or screw-on antenna is not allowed. The Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio has a 7.5 cm non-removable antenna, and the XT420 antenna is non-removable.86
On a business radio, the antenna screws on and off. Motorola says to replace a faulty DP3441e antenna only with MOTOTRBO antennas, and to fit it tightly for the water rating.10 Hytera says to use only approved antennas.11 Icom lists its antennas by frequency range, such as 400-450 MHz for the FA-SC26US and 430-470 MHz for the FA-SC57U.14 Pick the antenna that covers your band. Never transmit with no antenna, because Icom says it may damage the radio.14
The GMRS rule covers hand-helds that send digital data. For any other GMRS radio, check the rules for its model. See do you need a license for a walkie-talkie.
Chargers, batteries and carry accessories
Match the charger to the radio's charging port.
- The Talkabout T800 charges over micro-USB, and Motorola advises using its approved charger.12
- The Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio charges over USB-C from any charger that outputs at least 5 V and 1 A.8
- The Midland LXT600 uses a desktop charger with an AC adapter, or a DC adapter in a vehicle. The first charge takes 24 hours and later charges about 12 hours.24
- The XT420 offers a single drop-in tray and a multi-unit charger for up to 6 radios or batteries.6
Carry accessories are listed per radio. The XT420 guide lists a swivel holster.6 Hytera says to wear a radio on the body only in its approved clip, holder, holster, case or harness.11
Questions
Which earpiece fits my walkie-talkie?
The one that matches the radio's accessory connector, such as the single 2.5 mm jack on the Talkabout T800, the 2-pin connector on the XT420 or the K1 jack on the Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio. Use the maker's accessory list.268
Does any 2.5 mm earpiece work with any radio?
Not always. Kenwood lists 1-pin, 2-pin and multi-pin headsets as separate families, and Motorola lists receive-only and microphone earpieces separately.75
Does VOX work with an earpiece?
Yes, with a VOX-capable accessory. The T600 uses the headset microphone for VOX, and the XT50 PRO headset has a PTT and VOX switch.131
Do Bluetooth earpieces work with walkie-talkies?
With some business radios, yes. The DP3441e can connect a headset over Bluetooth at up to 10 m. The Talkabout T800 uses Bluetooth for a phone app only.1012
