Walkie-talkie battery life: what the hours on the box mean
The hours on the box come from a lab test, not from a day on a trail. Motorola measures battery life on the industry 5-5-90 duty cycle. That is 5% of the time sending, 5% receiving with the speaker on, and 90% waiting for a call.1 Midland gives the same cycle for the XT50 PRO.2
The split looks like this for one hour of use.
| Part of the 5/5/90 cycle | Share of the time | Minutes in one hour | What the radio does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transmit | 5% | 3 | Sends your voice |
| Receive | 5% | 3 | Plays a call through the speaker |
| Standby | 90% | 54 | Stays on and listens for a call |
So an 18-hour claim means about 54 minutes of talking and 54 minutes of listening in total. The other 16 hours are spent waiting. If your group talks more than that, the battery runs out sooner.
Kenwood shows how much. With one battery pack its NX-5200 lasts 10 hours at 5-5-90 and 6.5 hours at 10-10-80, where talking and listening take 10% each.3

Rocky Talkie rates its radios in days, so they sit outside the table. Its manuals say "3+ days" for the 5 W Expedition Radio and "4+ days" for the 2 W Mountain Radio.45 Rocky Talkie states no talk-and-standby split, so the days do not compare directly with 5/5/90 hours.
Among the 5/5/90 claims, the Motorola Talkabout T110 leads with about 19 hours on three AAA alkaline cells.6 The PMR446 Talkabout T62 claims up to 18 hours with its 800 mAh NiMH pack. The optional 1300 mAh pack raises that to 29 hours.7 Midland gives 16 hours for the 5 W GXT67 PRO on its spec sheet.8

Motorola claims up to 24 hours for the PMR446 XT185 on its standard Li-ion battery, at 5/5/90.9 Hytera calls the HP785's 24 hours a shift life, on high power with GNSS (satellite positioning) off. Its optional 3000 mAh pack gives 30 hours.10 The XT420 and XT460 claim up to 20 hours, with battery save on.11
A radio in digital mode lasts longer on the same pack. Motorola gives the UHF R7 19 hours in digital mode and 14.5 hours in analog with a 2200 mAh battery. With the 3200 mAh pack the figure rises to 28 hours in digital.12 More digital and analog battery figures are on DMR vs analog radio. More work radios are in business two-way radios.
Why walkie-talkie battery claims differ
Transmit power
Sending takes the most power. Midland's XT50 PRO manual says the batteries drain faster while you transmit.2 Its GXT67 PRO manual puts it plainly: lower power cuts range and adds battery life, and higher power does the reverse.13
Two Motorola radios with the same 1300 mAh NiMH pack show how far claims can drift. The PMR446 T62 sends 500 mW and claims up to 29 hours.7 The T800 is a US FRS radio, and FRS rules allow up to 2.0 W on the main channels. It claims up to 14 hours with Bluetooth off.1415 More power also buys less range than you would expect, as longest range walkie-talkies explains.
Battery type and size
A bigger pack lasts longer, and so do AA cells in many Motorola radios. These are Motorola's own figures for radios that take either the NiMH pack or three AA alkaline cells.
| Motorola radio | Included NiMH pack | Larger NiMH pack | 3 AA alkaline cells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Talkabout T470 (US) | 800 mAh: up to 12 h16 | 1300 mAh: up to 18 h16 | Up to 28 h16 |
| Talkabout T600 H2O (US) | Up to 9 h17 | — | Up to 23 h17 |
| Talkabout T800 (US) | 1300 mAh: up to 14 h14 | — | Up to 25 h14 |
| Talkabout T62 (EU, UK) | 800 mAh: up to 18 h7 | 1300 mAh: up to 29 h7 | — |
The T470 and T62 figures are on the 5/5/90 cycle.167 The T600 sheet gives no cycle for its figures.17
Cold weather
Cold slows a battery down. Energizer recommends alkaline cells for use between -18 °C and 55 °C (0 °F and 131 °F). In the cold they do not last as long.18 The charge is not lost: warm the battery up and it works normally again.18
Lithium-ion radios have limits too. Rocky Talkie rates the Mountain Radio to work down to -20 °C (-4 °F). It should charge only between 0 °C and 45 °C (32 °F and 113 °F).5 Motorola asks you to let a NiMH pack settle for about 20 minutes before charging it after moving between hot and cold.15
Rechargeable or AA batteries: which to choose
Pick a radio with a rechargeable pack for daily use and a charger at home. Pick one that also takes AA cells for long trips away from power. Many Motorola Talkabout radios take both.1416
Alkaline cells cannot be recharged in the radio. Midland warns against charging the radio without its rechargeable pack inside.2 The T600 H2O floats with its own NiMH pack, but Motorola says it may not float with some AA cells.17
Radios that charge by USB-C are the easiest to top up on the road. Rocky Talkie says its radios charge from phone and laptop chargers, power banks and solar chargers. The source must give at least 5 V and 1 A.45 That answers the solar question: a USB solar panel works if it gives that much.
Spare packs and chargers are covered in walkie-talkie accessories. Rocky Talkie sells a replacement battery, and its radios let you swap the pack.5
Charging takes hours. Motorola says an empty T800 pack takes 11 hours, and Midland gives the GXT67 PRO a 4-hour rapid charge.158 Cobra asks for 8 hours before first use of the RX680.19
Store radios with care. Motorola says to take the battery out before storage and to keep NiMH packs between -20 °C and 35 °C.15 It also says to charge a stored NiMH pack once every three months and not to leave the radio on the charger for good.1
How to make a walkie-talkie battery last longer
- Use low power when your group is close. Rocky Talkie's tip is to use the low-power channels on long trips when everyone stays near.45 FRS rules allow only 0.5 W on channels 8 to 14.15
- Keep battery save on. The XT50 PRO switches to power save after 10 seconds with no signal. Midland says that can add up to 50% to battery life.2 Cobra's RX680 does the same after 10 seconds without transmissions.19
- Turn off Bluetooth and GPS when you do not need them. Motorola's T800 claim is with Bluetooth off.14 Hytera gives the HP785 24 hours with GNSS off and 20 hours with it on.10
- Keep calls short. Motorola's T800 stops sending after 60 seconds of a held talk button, to prevent stray calls and save battery.15
- Switch the radio off at the end of the day. The Expedition Radio turns itself off after 36 hours with no activity. That saves the battery if it was packed while on.4
- Keep spare cells warm in the cold. A battery carried inside your jacket gives more than one left in a cold pack.18
