How the checker works
Each country decides which radios anyone can use and which need a license. The checker reads our license table: 15 countries and nine kinds of radio, each row taken from the regulator's own rules.
"Free to use" means you need no license of your own. The radio must still be an approved model, used within its power limit. In Europe that is PMR446 at 0.5 W with a fixed antenna. In the US, FRS radios need no license, and GMRS needs one that covers the user and the family.123
"Not allowed" usually means the radio was made for another region. A US FRS radio is not legal in the UK, and PMR446 radios have no service in the US.31
